The Missouri Historical Society is accepting applications from college students who are interested in fundraising and seek an unpaid academic internship within the Development department. Unpaid internships must be academic in nature, and the intern must earn academic credit by participating in the internship.

The Development Intern will assist in the implementation of the annual fund development plan, which includes identification, cultivation, solicitation, and recognition of membership. This internship takes place on-site at the Missouri History Museum and reports to the Database Administrator.


Schedule

A minimum of 10 hours per week for 12 to 15 weeks is desired, with a flexible schedule between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday. The final schedule will be determined with the supervisor.


The intern's responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Assisting with data entry 
  • Preparing membership packets and other mailings 
  • Managing the Time Travelers program and website 
  • Assisting Prospect Managers with donor research 
  • Working with Development staff on member events and programs 
  • Researching and recommending potential grant funding
  • Assisting in refreshing the current membership program by evaluating signage/brochures/website and proposing updates
  • Creating a fall membership acquisition campaign in collaboration with Development staff

Intern Qualifications:

  • College sophomore or above in good academic standing 
  • Interest in fundraising 
  • Solid written and oral communication skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills in interacting with staff, members, and donors 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information, work independently, and multitask

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of CRM software and fundraising best practices
  • Strengthen interpersonal communication skills with colleagues and volunteers in an office setting 
  • Provide intern with on-the-job training and experience in the development and fundraising fields
