Sample Exhibit Research Internship Job Description

Exhibit Research Internship

The Missouri Historical Society (MHS) is accepting applications from students who are interested in an unpaid internship within the exhibitions and research division of the Missouri History Museum. The position will report directly to the Exhibits Manager.

The Missouri History Museum is currently developing an exhibit related to women's activism in St. Louis with a strong focus on the suffrage movement. The exhibit will feature several important local women and events and explore how they shaped St. Louis history.

The exhibit research intern will conduct independent research at the Missouri Historical Society Library & Research Center and potentially at other locations, such as the Mercantile Library. The topic(s) of research will be determined once the internship has started and will be decided based on the intern's interests and the exhibit's needs. Some possible subjects could include Virginia Minor, Mary Meachum, Charlotte Rumbold, the Equal Suffrage League, or the Golden Lane parade.

At regular intervals, the intern will deliver results of his/her research, which should include copies of all pertinent primary and secondary sources, as well as a brief summary of findings. The intern may also have the opportunity to write research-related articles for MHS's blog, History Happens Here.

The work schedule is flexible, with hours typically between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday. A minimum of 10 hours of work per week is required. This internship will run from January through May 2018, and the final schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

The ideal candidate will be a graduate student with a major in American studies, history, gender studies, or a similar field. Candidates should have prior experience conducting research using historic documents and photographs.

To apply for this position, please fill out the online application. If selected for an interview, candidates will be asked to supply two references.

For questions, please contact: Vicki Kaffenberger at vak@mohistory.org or Tamaki A. Harvey Stratman at tamaki@mohistory.org.
