The Missouri Historical Society is accepting applications from current undergraduate or graduate students in their junior or senior years who are interested in gaining experience with historic clothing collections for an unpaid academic internship within the Museum Services Division for the fall 2021 semester. The intern will report to the Curator of Clothing and Textiles, and the internship will take place in person at the Library & Research Center, with some opportunity to work remotely.
The Clothing and Textile intern will work with the Curator to better document the Missouri Historical Society's collection of women's undergarments. This internship project will contribute to the long-term preservation, conservation, interpretation, and accessibility of the textile collection.
Schedule
The number of hours per week and the internship's duration are dependent upon the university's requirements for class credit. The schedule is flexible based upon the intern's availability and will be determined with the supervisor.
Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)
- Photographing all pieces of the undergarment collection
- Performing basic research, such as confirming titles, dates, and materials
- Updating the collections database as needed
Qualifications
- Current junior or senior undergraduate or graduate student
- Interest in the study of historic dress, fashion design, textiles, or curatorial or museum work
- Basic knowledge of fashion history and some prior knowledge of undergarment history is preferred
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Curator, as well as independently
- Familiarity with databases and online queries, experience with ProQuest is preferred
Learning Objectives
- To gain experience photographing and documenting museum collections
- To gain hands-on experience researching objects for identification purposes
- To receive on-the-job training and gain experience in the historical costume field
