The Missouri Historical Society is accepting applications from students and other candidates who are interested in community programming, museum studies, gender and sexuality studies, or history and seek a paid internship within the Community Engagement Department. This internship position reports to the Community Engagement Specialist.
The Gateway to Pride Programming and Outreach Intern will help develop, implement, and promote programming associated with the Gateway to Pride exhibit and collecting initiative. Working with various departments across the Missouri Historical Society, the intern in this position will help research, brainstorm, and vet ideas; consider strategies to reach specific audiences and assist with grassroots promotions; and assist with the execution of both on-site events and off-site promotional opportunities.
This internship is on-site but can be shifted to a remote position if necessary due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Schedule
A schedule of 20 hours per week is desired. The intern will work June 2022 through December 2022 for a total of 600 hours. The final schedule is flexible and will be determined with the supervisor. Some evening and weekend hours are required.
The intern's responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):
- Assisting with the development of programming ideas related to St. Louis's LGBTQIA+ history and communities, including researching potential topics, speakers, and performers
- Assisting in the execution of existing Gateway to Pride programming (e.g., helping with event setup, handing out surveys)
- Developing and implementing grassroots promotions for Gateway to Pride programming and collecting, which may include attending off-site events
- Creating a database of local LGBTQIA+ organizations and relevant contacts
- Assisting with the Missouri Historical Society's participation in pride events
- Attending relevant Gateway to Pride meetings as needed, including both internal meetings and meetings of the external Gateway to Pride Advisory Group
Intern Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED and at least 2 years of college coursework is required
- Coursework in history, social studies, American studies, urban studies, museum studies, gender and sexuality studies, community engagement, social work, or another related field is strongly preferred, or relevant work experience
- Interest in LGBTQIA+ history, gender and sexuality studies, American studies, program planning, or museum studies
- Familiarity with basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word
- Light research skills
- Strong interpersonal skills in interacting with collaborators and audiences from diverse backgrounds and communities, as well as staff, volunteers, and advisory group members
- Ability to think creatively about programming and how to reach audiences
- Ability to examine ideas honestly and empathetically
- Experience in collaborating with community groups is preferred
- Experience in planning, promoting, and facilitating events or community programs is preferred
- Ability to work off-site and work some nights and weekends (must be able to arrange own transportation for off-site activities)
- Ability to balance multiple projects concurrently and effectively meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to inclusively work with diverse audiences
Learning Objectives:
- Gain an understanding of St. Louis's LGBTQIA+ history and communities
- Strengthen interpersonal communication skills with colleagues, volunteers, and collaborators in an office setting
- Provide intern with on-the-job training and experience in the museum programming field, including collaboration and promotion
