Spring 2021 Donor Research Intern

The Missouri Historical Society is accepting applications from students who are interested in fundraising research and seek an unpaid academic internship within the Development Department. The Development Department raises funds through corporate and individual donations. This internship position reports to the Charitable Giving Advisors.

 

The Donor Research Intern will conduct online research for both individual and corporate prospective donors to determine whether they are a good prospect for solicitation and/or cultivation. Online research may be cross-referenced with MHS's Online Collections Search database. The intern will gain an understanding of best practices in development/fundraising, improve research and database skills, and receive on-the-job training and experience in the development/fundraising field.

 

The intern will work 8 to 10 hours per week, preferably on weekdays. The schedule for this position is flexible and can be adapted to the intern's schedule. Virtual work is approved and authorized. The final schedule will be determined by the supervisor.

 

The intern's responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Conducting online research about high-net-worth corporate and individual prospects
  • Gathering information regarding prospects' philanthropic interests, giving capacity, and affinity level with the organization
  • Cross-referencing prospects' interests with MHS's Online Collections Search database
  • Assisting with solicitation mailings for prospective individual and corporate donors
  • Assisting with additional needs of the Development Department as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student, preferably in nonprofit management, business, communications, or public relations, with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Interest in philanthropy/fundraising, prospect management, online research, and history
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong writing and analytical skills, including the ability to analyze and interpret business and financial data information
  • Experience with development, fundraising, prospect research, and/or relevant field is a plus
  • Ability to work virtually if needed or desired with nominal supervision and independent decision-making
