The Missouri Historical Society is accepting applications from enthusiastic college students who seek an unpaid academic internship within the Education and Visitor Experience Department. Serving as a tour guide with the See STL Tours Program, this internship position reports to the Community Tours Manager.
This part-time intern will study and experience how neighborhood and city tours can be approached from a public history standpoint and the challenges and solutions they present. The intern will prepare and deliver tours on subjects of their choice as well as assist in delivering tours presently offered. Responsibilities include but are not limited to developing and delivering programming, researching topics, and gathering feedback. All See STL Tours will adhere to guidelines provided by the Department of Health for the City of St. Louis.
*At the direction of the Department of Health for the City of St. Louis, protective face coverings are required for all walking tours for guests age 9 and up. Guests will also be asked to practice social distancing during tours.*
The intern will gain experience in delivering public history programming through walking and/or virtual tours; be able to connect the challenges of different neighborhoods' stories to larger historic themes or events; and learn about methods of interpreting the history not only of a specific site, but also of a region and according to certain themes.
A minimum of 4 hours per week is required, with a flexible schedule to fit the intern's needs. Some virtual work is approved and authorized. The final schedule will be determined with the supervisor.
The intern's responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):
- Development and research of tour topics
- Research related to St. Louis history
- Collaboration with community partners for tour enhancement and research
- Assist in delivering tours
- Assistance with and delivery of tours, either of student's choice or from list of pre-existing tours
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate or graduate student in history, public history, American studies, or a related field
- Strong ability to connect with tour attendees
- Familiarity with and passion for sharing St. Louis history
- Research, organization, and public speaking experience
- Ability to provide tours throughout the city of St. Louis, manage group dynamics, and be flexible with topics and tour routes
