Sample Spring 2021 Teens and Theatre Programs Intern Job Description

Spring 2021 Teens and Theatre Programs Intern

The Missouri Historical Society is accepting applications from college students who are interested in theatre education and seek an unpaid academic internship with Teens Make History (TMH), an award-winning, work-based learning program that helps teens develop life skills and become career- and college-ready (learn more at mohistory.org/tmh). This internship position reports to the Teen and Theatre Programs Manager.

The Teen and Theatre Programs Intern will meet primarily with the TMH Players, a small group of teens who research, write, and perform short plays interpreting historical and contemporary topics. Since 2007 the group has performed more than 30 original plays. The intern will have the opportunity to design and facilitate lessons and activities to support the TMH Players as they write and rehearse a short play to be performed virtually or in the Missouri History Museum galleries.

The intern will strengthen professional communication skills through interactions with colleagues and students; have the opportunity to network and establish contacts in the museum field; learn about and apply principles of creative youth development; improve lesson planning and facilitation skills through hands-on experience; and become comfortable adapting and adjusting plans on the fly in a dynamic environment.

The intern will work a minimum of 7 hours per week for 15 weeks (January 19-May 1, 2021). The intern must be available to meet with the teens for at least 5 hours per week during their regular work schedule (Tuesday-Friday, 3:30-5:30pm; Saturday, 10:00am-4:00pm). Tuesday/Thursday availability is preferred. Additional time will be needed for planning and preparation; these hours are flexible. The final schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

The intern's responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Interacting directly with a diverse group of high school students during their regular work meetings and modeling professional skills
  • Developing and leading targeted team-building and skill-development activities
  • Assisting with (and possibly directing) a TMH theatre production, including leading warm-ups and improv exercises and helping block scenes
  • Attending professional development training sessions with Education and Interpretation staff whenever possible

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student with the ability to receive academic credit for this MHS internship
  • Interest in theatre, education, living history, improv, interpretation, or similar
  • Experience with theatre strongly preferred; experience working with youth ages 14-18 is a plus
  • Ability to accept feedback, adapt, and try new strategies
  • Willingness to engage with complex issues through dialogue
  • Ability to work remotely if necessary

The applicant must provide a resume and a short statement of interest and/or intent in applying for the internship. For unpaid internships, an unofficial college or university transcript must also be uploaded with the application. For questions, please contact Hope Mabrey at hmabrey@mohistory.org or Tamaki A. Harvey Stratman at tamaki@mohistory.org.

The Missouri Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that serves as the confluence of historical perspectives and contemporary issues to inspire and engage our audiences.
