Sample Summer Fall 2020 Digital Collaboration Practicuum Job Description

Summer -Fall 2020 Digital Collaboration Practicuum

The Missouri Historical Society (MHS), which serves as the administrative contact for MissouriHub, is accepting applications from graduate students who are interested in an unpaid digital collaboration practicum for course credit.

This part-time intern will participate in ongoing efforts to increase collaboration around digitization in the state of Missouri. This practicum is not a hands-on digitization experience. Instead, it will provide exposure to the operations of several organizations that support collaborative digitization: MissouriHub, a service hub of DPLA (the Digital Public Library of America); MOBIUS, a multitype library consortium serving libraries in Missouri and beyond; the Missouri State Library; and DPLA itself.

MissouriHub is developing a mentoring program that pairs 20+ libraries in Missouri that have not yet launched their first digitization project with more experienced digitizers. This mentoring program is the primary focus of this practicum.

This is a three-credit-hour practicum (135 hours). With consent of the Practicum Advisor, it is preferable that the hours be spread between the summer and fall terms, 4 to 5 hours per week. Most of the responsibilities of this practicum can be met remotely via email or conference call. Schedule permitting, conference calls may be attended at the site supervisor's office.

The intern's responsibilities may include:

  • Attending 4 to 5 monthly conference calls with project partners
  • Following communications between mentors and mentees and preparing a monthly summary report
  • Attending monthly in-person digitization meetings at practicum supervisor's site
  • Participating in shared training sessions on "Digitization 101" topics
  • Reviewing grant application and helping schedule assessments

Qualifications:

  • Coursework and/or experience in digitization of library or museum special collections
  • Strong interest in digitization and library partnerships
  • Experience with communication tools used to coordinate group projects
  • Good oral and written communication skills

The applicant must provide a rsum, a list of graduate school courses taken or currently enrolled in, a short statement of interest and/or intent, and a completed application. If selected for an interview, the candidate will be asked to supply two references. For questions, please contact Hope Mabrey at hmabrey@mohistory.org or Tamaki A. Harvey Stratman at tamaki@mohistory.org.

The Missouri Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that serves as the confluence of historical perspectives and contemporary issues to inspire and engage our audiences.
