Sample Summer 2020 Archaeological Collections Internship Job Description

Summer 2020 Archaeological Collections Internship

The Missouri Historical Society is accepting applications from students interested in an unpaid research internship with the Native American collection of archeological artifacts.

This part-time intern will assist in analyzing, describing, marking, and cataloging artifacts in the extensive archaeological lithic tool, shell and bone, and/or pottery collections at the MHS Library & Research Center. The successful candidate will gain firsthand experience with collection processing and cataloging standards for these artifacts and an appreciation of best practices in caring for these important early expressions of North American material culture.

A minimum of 10 hours per week for 12 to 15 weeks is desired, with a flexible schedule between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday. The final schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

The intern's responsibilities may include (but will not be limited to):

  • Identifying morphological types and materials using provided guides
  • Consistently applying descriptive nomenclature for individual artifacts within the collections database management system
  • Labeling and tagging artifacts with collections tracking information
  • Constructing archival storage housing
  • Recording weight and size measurements and surface markings
  • Photographing individual artifacts and associating images with record metadata
  • Assisting in research and documentation necessary for potential collection acquisitions

Although preference will be given to graduate students, undergraduate students in good academic standing with a passion for and competency in the subject may be considered. Appropriate fields of academic study include archaeology, material culture studies, history, museum studies, archive management, environmental studies, library sciences, or similar. The applicant should possess good communication, computer, and research skills, and be able to sensitively handle and care for delicate artifacts.

The applicant must provide a rsum, short statement of interest and/or intent, and completed application. If selected for an interview, the candidate will be asked to supply two references and a brief descriptive writing sample on a historical research topic.
