The Missouri Historical Society's Soldiers Memorial Military Museum is accepting applications
from students who are interested in conducting research on the people (individuals,
companies, and institutions) associated with artifacts in a museum collection and seek a paid
academic internship within the Collections Department.

This internship position reports to the Soldiers Memorial Collections Manager and may work
collaboratively with the Military and Firearms Curator as necessary.

The revitalized Soldiers Memorial Military Museum reopened in the heart of downtown St.
Louis on November 3, 2018. Following a two-year, $30 million renovation, Soldiers Memorial is
a state-of-the-art museum facility that honors military service members, veterans, and their
families under the operational leadership of the Missouri Historical Society.

This internship position will assist with research on the people (individuals, companies, and
institutions) associated with artifacts in the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum Collections.
This research will expand the stories we can tell in our exhibitions and social media content.

Schedule
The intern will work a minimum of 4 hours and a maximum of 10 hours per week between May
31 and July 30. The schedule is flexible depending upon the intern's schedule. Extensive online
and offsite interaction between the intern and colleagues is expected. The final schedule will be
determined with the supervisor.

The intern's responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

Researching the history of individuals, companies/manufacturers, and institutions
associated with artifacts in the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum Collections
Synthesizing findings into small biographies based on set standards
Compiling copies of electronic resources for Soldiers Memorial item history files
Identifying interesting individuals or personal stories that can be highlighted in social
media or full-length blog posts
Developing several social media and/or blog posts based on research
Creating a list of individuals/personal stories that align with rotation needs

Qualifications:

Undergraduate or graduate student working toward a BA or MA in history or public
history
Interest in historical research and writing
Knowledge of institutions and resources (both physical and online) where applicable
research materials are likely to be located, plus some previous experience navigating
those resources
Experience with standard MS Office applications, especially Excel, Word, Teams, and
Outlook
Computer and internet access
Strong written and oral communication skills with an appreciation for the importance of
team communication

Learning Objectives:

Strengthen historical research and writing skills
Understand the importance of research in relation to complete artifact records and the
ability to utilize artifacts in exhibits and online content
Create engaging social media content utilizing research
Strengthen interpersonal communication skills with colleagues
