Soldiers Memorial Military Museum is accepting applications from undergraduate or graduate students who are interested in a museum career path and seek a paid internship within the Education and Community Engagement department. This internship position reports to the Education Coordinator.


The Education and Visitor Engagement (EVE) Intern will help catalog, rehouse, and research the objects in the teaching collection at Soldiers Memorial using best practices. In addition to cataloging and research, the intern will develop a teaching program for students in grades 6 to 12 that includes objects in the teaching collection. The intern will also have the opportunity to work alongside other staff and assist with front desk navigational duties, additional educational research, and museum events. This internship is on-site with potential opportunity for hybrid work.


Schedule

A schedule of 15 hours per week for eight weeks is desired. Workdays are typically Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm. The schedule is flexible dependent upon the intern's availability. The final schedule will be determined with the supervisor.



The intern's responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):


  • Cataloging objects in the teaching collection
  • Researching teaching collection object histories
  • Assisting with object rehousing
  • Developing a student teaching program utilizing researched objects
  • Evaluating items to add or remove from the teaching collection
  • Serving as a front-line Navigator to assist guests during their visits to Soldiers Memorial Military Museum

Intern Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student studying history, public history, museum studies, or a related field
  • Interest in museum education, visitor engagement, and object research
  • Must have relevant coursework, strong research and organizational skills, and experience with Office 365
  • Strong interpersonal skills in interacting with staff, visitors, and student groups
  • Experience in object research, museum studies, and museum education
  • Ability to be self-motivated, work independently, and multitask

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of best practices for organizing museum teaching collections and educational programming creation
  • Strengthen historical research skills
  • Provide intern with on-the-job training and experience in the museum education and visitor engagement field
