The Missouri Historical Society (MHS) is accepting applications from students who are interested in youth development and seek an unpaid internship with Teens Make History (TMH), an award-winning work-based learning program that helps teens develop life skills and become career- and college-ready. Teens Make History is within the MHS's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility division. This internship takes place on-site at the Missouri History Museum and reports to the Teen Programs Manager.

The Teen Programs Intern will work directly with the Teens Make History Academy and Teen Apprentices. The TMH Academy is an eight-week summer program that gives teens a behind-the-scenes look at the world of museums (learn more at mohistory.org/tmh-academy). Teen Apprentices work year-round at the Missouri History Museum on complex projects that work to fulfill the MHS mission, including exhibits, oral history projects, walking tours, and more (learn more at mohistory.org/tmh). The Teen Programs Intern will serve as a teaching assistant for the TMH Academy and support the Teen Apprentices as they prepare for the opening of their upcoming exhibit at Soldiers Memorial Military Museum about homelessness among veterans.

The intern must earn academic credit by participating in this internship.

Schedule

A minimum of 16 hours per week for 10 weeks (June 6 to August 12) is desired. The intern must be available from 1:00 to 5:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for TMH Academy meetings. Availability on Fridays from 9:00am to 1:00pm for Teen Apprentice field trips is strongly preferred. Additional time will be needed for planning and preparation; these hours are flexible. The final schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

The intern's responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Interacting directly with a diverse group of 20 to 30 high school students and modeling professional skills
  • Attending all sessions of the TMH Academy and providing support to teen participants and the program leader
  • Leading (and potentially developing) team-building and skill-development activities
  • Coordinating weekly field trips for Teen Apprentices, including organizing logistical materials, developing and facilitating group discussions, and serving as a chaperone
  • Preparing materials for TMH Academy meetings and assisting with setup and cleanup

Intern Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student
  • Interest in education, museum studies, social work, history, or similar field
  • Experience working with youth ages 15 to 18 preferred
  • Ability to draw and maintain appropriate boundaries with teenage students and staff
  • Willing to accept feedback, adapt, and try new strategies
  • Comfortable engaging with complex issues through dialogue
  • Accepting and supportive of LGBTQIA+ youth (including trans and nonbinary youth)

Learning Objectives:

  • Strengthen professional communication skills through interactions with colleagues and students; network and establish contacts in the museum field
  • Learn about and apply principles of creative youth development
  • Improve lesson planning and facilitation skills through hands-on experience
  • Become comfortable adapting and adjusting plans on the fly in a dynamic environment

The applicant must provide a résumé and a short statement of interest and/or intent in applying for the internship. For unpaid internships, an unofficial college or university transcript must also be uploaded with the application. For questions, please contact Dara Taylor at dtaylor@mohistory.org.
